about

The market-gardening village of Bromham in Wiltshire is very close to my heart and I have deep roots there. Most of my family - on both my mother's and my father's side - are from Bromham and the surrounding areas. It is a place where I have spent a considerable part of my life over the years and will continue to do so.

The song titles reflect many of the places and landmarks within the village which hold memories and emotions for me personally. The field recordings which open and close the album were recorded in my mother's garden looking out across the fields to Roundway Hill (where The Battle Of Roundway Down took place during the English Civil War in 1643). The vocal on 'The Oldest Man In The Village' was provided by my Great Uncle Ivor, who is currently 103 years old and the vocal on 'A Word From The Chairman Of The Parish Council' was provided by my late father's stepfather, who is still to this day the chairman of the Parish Council.

The music on this album was produced predominantly using analog synths, analog drum machine, electric guitar and acoustic guitar. There is also a touch of theremin, melodica, Bontempi fan organ and harmonica. Some analogue guitar pedals were used across the album as well as some digital soft synths and FX.

"It's right up my street, lovely buccholic spongey weirdness" - Jim Jupp, Ghost Box

"And to finish? 'Bromham Carnival Queen, 1967' employs somnambulant Pink Floyd guitars in tribute to the proud holder of said title, Cargill's mother Linda" - Bob Fischer, Electronic Sound
